Australian citizenship

To be eligible to apply for a role with AUSTRAC, you must be an Australian citizen. In exceptional circumstances, the CEO may approve a waiver of the citizenship requirement. 


Redundancy benefits

If you have accepted a redundancy benefit from elsewhere in the Australian Public Service (APS) please refer to the APSC guidelines regarding your eligibility to apply for vacancies.


Pre-employment checks

Should you be successful in a role at AUSTRAC you will be required to undergo a number of pre-employment checks which may include:

  • referee checks
  • psychometric assessment
  • evidence of academic qualifications as noted in your employment application
  • evidence of proof of identity and Australian citizenship
  • medical assessment
  • a police records check
  • a security clearance at the relevant level
  • agency-specific suitability, character and security checks, and 
  • other appropriate checks.

Security clearance

A security clearance involves pre-employment and background checks. AUSTRAC roles require a security clearance because of the type of issues/information you may come across during your period of employment. The timeframe for commencing at AUSTRAC may vary, depending on the level of security clearance that is required.

All roles at AUSTRAC are Designated Security Assessed Positions. If you are offered a role with AUSTRAC, you will need to obtain and maintain a Commonwealth clearance at one of the following levels:

  • Baseline
  • Negative Vetting 1, or
  • Negative Vetting 2.

Agency specific suitability, character and security checks

Should you be successful in a recruitment process at AUSTRAC, you will be required to undertake a pre-employment security assessment to determine your suitability for employment at AUSTRAC. This questionnaire is in addition to the Commonwealth Security Clearance and involves completing a financial and company disclosure questionnaire and other relevant checks.

If AUSTRAC receives information that is inconsistent with your application, this may result in an offer of employment not being made to you, or your employment being terminated.

 

Should you hold a current Commonwealth Security Clearance at the relevant level, AUSTRAC will liaise with the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) to arrange transfer of your Security Clearance to AUSTRAC. Ongoing employment with AUSTRAC is subject to maintaining a security clearance at the required level and satisfactory status of AUSTRAC-specific checks.
