Minister appoints New AUSTRAC Director

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Neil James Jensen PSM as the new Director of the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC).

AUSTRAC is the intelligence agency responsible for gathering and disseminating financial data to support law enforcement and protection of revenue.

Mr Jensen has been Deputy Director at AUSTRAC for seven years and succeeds Ms Elizabeth Montano who resigned in December 2001.

He was awarded the Public Service Medal in 1995 for the development and introduction of the reporting to AUSTRAC of international funds transfer instructions by Australian financial organisations.

Following the events of 11 September 2001, the international Financial Action Taskforce (FATF) on money laundering introduced eight special recommendations dealing with the prevention and suppression of the financing of terrorism and terrorist acts and associated money laundering.

Under Mr Jensen's leadership, AUSTRAC will play an important part in the implementation in Australia of those recommendations that fall within the Centre's functions.

Mr Jensen has been appointed for a four-year term.
