The government is now operating in accordance with the caretaker conventions, pending the outcome of the 2025 federal election. This is standard practice that begins once an election is called and continues until a new government is formed.

During this time, AUSTRAC will operate in accordance with caretaker conventions. These conventions ensure that the agency remains impartial and does not make decisions, announcements or commitments that could influence the election or bind an incoming government. 

AUSTRAC will continue its regulatory and enforcement functions during this period. Some matters will be deferred or handled in consultation with the Attorney-General’s Department, as appropriate.
