Today AUSTRAC Deputy CEO Peter Clark has been awarded the Public Service Medal (PSM) for outstanding service to the Australian community.

For the last 17 years Peter has served the Australian public with excellence and distinction and has played a significant role in ensuring the stability and security of the Australian financial sector.

Peter commenced his public service in 1991 as Head of International Relations within the Australian Securities and Investments Commission before going on to work in senior positions for the International Organisation of Securities Commissions and the International Monetary Fund.

In 2006, Peter joined AUSTRAC following the passage of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act). This was a critical period in AUSTRAC’s history, with the AML/CTF Act fundamentally changing Australia's approach to money laundering and terrorism financing, and Peter was instrumental to its successful implementation.

Today, Peter continues to play an important role in combating financial crime in Australia, and in recent years has taken a leading role in the enforcement of Australia’s AML/CTF laws, including through initiating and pursuing enforcement actions against Tabcorp and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, setting a benchmark for AML/CTF compliance into the future. 

AUSTRAC CEO Nicole Rose said that Peter Clark’s award of a Public Service Medal is a befitting acknowledgement of his distinguished public service over many years.

'I am very pleased that Peter’s dedication to serving and protecting the Australian people has been recognised today', Ms Rose said.

'The Public Service Medal is awarded to individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty, and I can certainly confirm that Peter does that every day. I can’t think of a more deserving recipient'.
