ROLE CONTEXT
The Engineering Team Lead is a leading member of the Enterprise Analytics section’s engineering capability within the Innovation and Technology Solutions (ITS) branch. The role reports directly to the Senior Director of Enterprise Analytics.
As Engineering Team lead, you will be responsible for the delivery and quality of the outputs of the team you are leading. While you are a technically strong engineer, realistically only 20-30% of your time will be hands on the tools writing code and delivering features. The majority of your time will be working with technical, delivery and business stakeholders, and leveraging your expertise to solve problems to support your team to deliver against ITS and agency objectives.
The role will span a range of activities including designing and building new capabilities to support our product roadmap, architectural review of new and current solutions, work task management, reduction of tech debt and enhancement to improve operational effectiveness of the products your team run and support.
DUTIES
The Engineering Team Lead, under broad direction, is responsible for:
- Line management of the Engineering Team
- Making high-level system architectural and technology decisions, drawing on the advice and expertise of your team
- Understanding the research algorithms underpinning the projects, and leading the translation of these into useful business products
- Being the primary liaison point between engineering team members, researcher team members, other teams in AUSTRAC with whom there are dependencies, and business stakeholders
- Driving appropriate and pragmatic software development process and practices
- Advocating for engineering “ilities” and constructively weighing and communicating the trade-offs against other project requirements
- Proactively identifying technical and delivery risks to the project as early as possible
- Proactively anticipating and identifying when clarity is needed from business or research, or when a tactical technical decision is required in the presence of ambiguous requirements, to progress implementation
- Assisting delivery leadership with clear work planning and delivery estimations
- Communicating engineering decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Working with project governance to ensure successful product delivery
- Fostering a positive, respectful, and delivery focused culture for the team
- Contributing to project, team and branch reporting as required
- Performing management administration tasks as required
- Contributing to ITS architectural and system design development processes
- Understanding the legislative, regulatory and compliance frameworks that underpin AUSTRAC’s activities
- Understanding at a strategic level the business, their functions and environment to support future data analytic tools, methodologies and facilitate knowledge sharing
- Contributing to strategic plans, which satisfy the current and ongoing needs of the organisation's business strategy, and the current and future capabilities
- Working closely with other teams in Enterprise Analytics and ITS to ensure solution deliverables are useful, scalable and sustainable
- Advocating for engineering best-practice throughout Enterprise Analytics and ITS
- Maintaining a watching brief on the technical landscape and maintaining professional skills
- Writing, and mentoring other engineers to write, robust, performant, secure, production quality code and tests, and participating in the code review process
- Undertaking other tasks to support the Enterprise Analytics team as required
- Representing Enterprise Analytics and AUSTRAC at external events
